The Seyyah help centre

How does using a travel eSIM affect two-factor authentication?

Short answer: Seyyah Mobile eSIMs are data-only. They have no phone number, so they cannot receive SMS verification codes. Your 2FA codes still go to the phone number registered with your bank or app, which is usually your home SIM.

Are there eSIMs with two-factor activation?

Seyyah Mobile data eSIMs do not receive SMS, so they can't be the number your SMS codes go to. To keep getting codes while you travel:

  1. Keep your home SIM active. On phones that support eSIM, your physical SIM (or main eSIM) and a data eSIM can be installed together. Use the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep your home line on for calls and SMS. Ask your home carrier what receiving SMS abroad costs.
  2. Use an authenticator app. App-generated codes (TOTP) don't need SMS. Set them up before you leave, while you still have your home number.
  3. Save backup codes. Many services give you one-time recovery codes. Store them somewhere safe and offline.
  4. Don't remove your home SIM or eSIM profile. If you delete an eSIM profile, you may not be able to reinstall it while abroad.
