Important: where the phone was bought matters

Your phone must be carrier-unlocked.
iPhone: models sold in mainland China have no eSIM (except iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max and iPhone Duo). Models sold in Hong Kong or Macao have eSIM only on iPhone XS, 12 mini, 13 mini, SE (2nd/3rd gen), 16e, the iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air, 17e, 18 Pro / Pro Max and Duo.
Samsung: Galaxy models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan have no eSIM, and neither do some US models (Galaxy S20, S21, Note 20 Ultra) and most South Korean models.
Google Pixel: Pixel 2 / 2 XL use eSIM only with Google Fi. Pixel 3 / 3 XL sold in Australia, Japan or Taiwan, and Pixel 3a / 3a XL sold in Japan or Southeast Asia or bought from Verizon, have no eSIM.
Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, OnePlus and other Android brands usually have eSIM only on global/European versions, not on Chinese versions.
